I started to write this blog two weeks ago, but the holidays delayed me. After the Lions big win at home Xmas Eve, I thought I missed the boat by missing my post. Even after a tough loss in GB, the Lions record carries with it a trip to the playoffs. So, this blog is still “oh so” appropriate.
Not the Same Ole Lions
Can we bury the “Same Ole Lions” mantra once and for all? I realize everyone has different definitions as to what “Same Ole Lions” really means, but essentially it typically boiled down to defining new and exciting way for the team to continuously torture the fan base.
The “Same Ole Lions” always found new ways to lose. They found new ways to fumble away a victory, a good play, or even a step in the right direction. They always found new ways to mess up the draft, and often saw good players arrive with mediocrity, and mediocre players go onto better things elsewhere (although the later was few and far between, actually).
They just found ways to make being a Lions fan a blood bath sport.
The stories always felt like a worse version of a previous heart breaking story.
“Same ole Lions.”
But this team, our current Lions team, they just find ways to win. Yes, they are very flawed. And yes, they have made mistakes along the way that have made most of us insane. But, in the end, it’s about winning. And our “New Era Lions’ win, baby!
Ok, they may not win their playoff game in New Orleans. A win is possible, even if it’s not plausible. New Orleans is a good team on a hot streak, who plays at home, and plays with one of the most humbling quarterbacks in the league. A win for our Lions feels a bit improbable, to say the least.
But, even if our Lions lose this playoff game, they still end the season with a winning record. Regardless of how and when this season ends, they will end with a winning record. This truthful statement exceeds any of my preseason expectations. And although expectations going forward include winning a championship, for this year, making the playoffs is certainly frosting on the cake.
And that’s really why this Lions team no longer feels like the “Same Ole Lions.” Instead of under-performing to low expectations, this team has exceeded expectations. Hell, they have even done such all while being mainly young and dumb. Just think what they could actually do together, when they mature and wise up; the future certainly looks bright in Detroit.
So, we all may be drinking the seasonal Lions Kool-Aid and lathering in the Honolulu butter, but let’s be sure we also enjoy the frosted cake of success; it sure does taste pretty sweet.
Roar baby! And Go Lions!
With the roar behind me, I still document my prediction of a Saints victory, even though it should be closer than many assume. Lions beat the spread, and the Saints win by 7.
Let’s hope, like my pre-season prediction, the Lions prove me wrong. Let’s hope the Lions go marching out with a heart pounding victory.
